Over the years, my partner and I have moved house many times. Soon after we were first married we lived in a small duplex in a suburb of the city we worked in. This duplex was the lower level of a large modern home. To begin with we did not have a lot of money to spare. We both had lived on our own for a few years after university.
Up until this time we had always shared apartments with friends we had met along the way. When we finally setup house together we had bedroom furnishings and lounge furniture, but no table and chairs. There was a worktop in the kitchen so we for the time being we decided to use bar stools at the counter to eat our meals, this was a temporary solution to the problem. A friend very kindly gave us a card table and chairs as a wedding present, so we were able to put this up if we were going to have friends over for dinner.

The folding chairs were wooden and not very comfortable. I invested in some rocking chair cushions and a round top to put on the table that made it into a table for six and also made it more robust. You could also buy breakfast chair cushions instead; either would do just as well. The circular top was hinged so it could be folded in half and stored under the stairs.
A year after we were married, we purchased a farm house on the edge of town. It wasn't large, but it was sufficient for our needs and we cherished the opportunity to do up a place of our own. In the kitchen there was a shaker style table and benches. It was situated in the bay window area, which was just simply a fabulous place to eat any type of meal.
As there was no formal dining area to speak of, we did not go out and buy a dining table and chairs. Instead, we opted to go for rocking chair cushions again to replace the ones that were on the bench. As I mentioned previously, we could have chosen any type of chair cushions really, we just preferred the rocking chair cushions because they seemed to offer more comfort.
I bought a typical country valance for the top of the bay windows and found some breakfast chair cushions that coordinated. All of these effects made the table really welcoming and it was just like sitting in a small cubicle at a local diner.
Our next house was three times the size of our first duplex. This time we did have a formal dining area for the very first time. Added to this we also had an informal dining area and a "snug" where the kids hung out and watched TV. The design of the house was very open plan. There was also a kitchen worktop that had room for four bar stools.
For our first week in the new house we ate at the counter since we did not have tables in the dining areas. When some friends called and asked if they could come over to see the house, they said they would come over with a Chinese takeaway. We found our folding table and chairs that had been buried in our storage for so long. I had saved the rocking chair cushions so we tied them on and covered the table with a cloth. I also managed to find the breakfast chair cushions as well. The table and chairs looked very small in the formal dining area.
Now we are back in a small farmhouse. We live by the side of a lake having downsized to the opulence of lakeside living. We now have two dining room tables and chairs. One set is over one hundred and fifty years old! The wooden chairs are not very comfortable so I bought rocking chair cushions to place on the seats. I am sure as we age we will once again most likely move back to where we started - into a duplex!
